Jukan Tateisi (b. 1986) was born in Chicago, US. From a young age, Tateisi lived in Amsterdam, Japan and Toronto before starting his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Information at Keio University, Tokyo. In 2009, he began studying for a master’s degree in System Design and Management at the same university and graduated in 2011. In 2017, he enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London, UK, for his second master’s degree in Fine Art Photography. Tateisi completed his degree with distinction for his thesis, It can sing; it can compose; it can shoot, in 2020. Upon graduation that same year, Tateisi returned to Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tateisi is a visual and sound artist, aiming to synthesise the dichotomous boundaries between the virtual and the real, the natural and the artificial, as well as practice and management. Some of the artist’s past projects and exhibitions include To the Fog (KITTE, 2021), Allscape in a Hall (Artists’ Fair Kyoto, 2020), The drowned world anchor (SPIRAL HALL, 2019), and Le Jardin Convivial (Kyoto Botanical Gardens, 2019).

Tateisi co-founded The 5th Floor, an alternative art space in Tokyo, and TŌGE, an experimental "living" lab, in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The artist was selected for New Contemporaries 2021 and was awarded Set Design of the Year (with ULTRA STUDIO) at the Frame Award 2021. His interdisciplinary practice extends into film and music, including his selection for the Toronto International Film Festival (2025) for Still Single, a documentary co-directed with Jamal Burger about the work and life of Chef Masaki Saito, Canada’s first Michelin two-star chef, as well as the launch of his pop music project .jvkn (2024–), reflecting a personal approach that moves fluidly between high art and mass culture.

Currently based in Karuizawa, Nagano, Tateisi divides his time between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagano.
